From Savage to Negro: Anthropology and the Construction of Race, 1896-1954
Published in Hardcover by University of California Press (November, 1998)
Average review score:

An excellent study in United States historyDr. Baker's work is not merely of interest for anthropologists. He looks at the overlapping histories of "racial science" and the politics of race relations in the United States between 1896 and 1954. His narrative is impressively written and accessible to a wide readership. Please take a look at this book if you have any interest whatsoever in the current public debates over affirmative action, racial categories, or civil rights law enforcement--or if you have interest in the recent "Bell Curve"-inspired debates over supposed theories about race, class, and I.Q. Baker's From Savage to Negro provides a historical perspective on the uncanny resonance between racial politics and "racial science" in U.S. history that is desperately needed in today's public debates over the social and political meanings of "race" in contemporary American society.

Frommers New York CityThis book is great! I loved the fact that the book included a map with all of the important sites on it. That made finding my way around really easy. The reviews of attractions and restaurants were also usually right on (with the exception of one late night meal at a recommended restaurant). I highly recommend this book to anyone.

Frommer's 2000 Portable New York CityThis New York City compact guide belongs in any visitor's purse or pocket. The guide offers helpful websites which I accessed for information on ticket purchases and future events, as well as offering practical advice on personal safety issues. There are detailed descriptions and directions to the city's main attractions, including the subway numbers to get there. The author has shopping tips for luxury and bargain hunters alike. Note: You will probably need a more detailed guide for accomadations and dining such as the AAA New York Tourbook, to use as an adjunct.

George Washington: Pioneer Farmer (The George Washington Bookshelf)
Published in Paperback by University Press of Virginia (April, 1998)
Average review score:

Gracefully explores an important area of Washington's lifeThe book is a finally written, well reserched study of Washington's agricultural endeavors. As a careful examiner of Washington's life, I can tell you that the Fusonies' rpovided a much needed study of an aspect of Washington's life that was important not only to himself, but to the planter society he lived in. This book's careful study of Washington provides a better synopsis of the role of agriculture in molding the Virginia society that produces many of the leaders of the Revolution than more well-known books such as, Tobacco Culture by T.H. Breen

Getting Prices Right: The Debate over the Accuracy of the Consumer Price Index (Economic Policy Institute)
Published in Paperback by M.E.Sharpe (October, 1997)
Average review score:

The best book on this important issue. This is a must read for anyone interested in getting prices right. The debate over prices concerns both public policy and pure economic research. The Boskin Commission claimed that the CPI overstates inflation and recommended that measures of inflation be ajdusted to correct for this. This recommendation was quickly embraced by many in the economics profession. It has also had an impact on public policy debate, particularly as regards indexation of social security. The first half of the book presents the Boskin Commission's findings verbatim, and supporters of overstatement are able to speak for themselves. The second half presents Dr. Baker's deconstruction of the Commission's findings. One part of his criticism involves the presentation of technical arguments and instances of CPI understatement. However, the most compelling part is Dr. Baker's reconstruction of recent U.S. economic history using Boskin's implied measure of prices. He shows that 50% of families were apparently living below the 1994 poverty level in 1960. This is implausible. Protagonists of the debate will no doubt continue slinging instances of over- and understatement of prices at each other. However, until supporters of CPI overstatement can explain away Dr. Baker's findings about implied poverty levels, their arguments will ring hollow.
